This one from the Sweets in PEI

Hi David
I came across this one of a kind lambswool rug in a little shop called Cottage Industry on Grafton Street in downtown Charlottetown and thought it might be of interest to someone in the club.  It had a price tag of only $995.  Everyone should have one!!!

Pat

Christmas Car Art

Hi Dave:
Thought I’d share this card along with a drawing from an internet acquaintance.  George is a longtime MG aficionado (fifty years!), an accomplished artist who is in his eighties and still travels regularly in his LBCs, recently to Stowe.  He owns an MG TD, a TF and a 1966 B.

MGB Internals And Much More At Gaydon

The Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon, Warwickshire, UK houses the world’s greatest collection of British cars. It also is from where heritage certificates for British classic cars are issued. The collection of more than 180 different makes and models ranks alongside the Goodwood Revival as a “must-see” attraction for all FABACians visiting the UK. I know, i’ve been to both. For Gaydon, figure on a day-long visit and take in the Land Rover Demonstration Drive along steep gullies, across streams and through deep, deep mud! For more information go online to “gaydon heritage centre”.

Another Official Report!

  We'll always have Paris......
   ...and those damn MG mudflaps.

After going missing for a couple of years, they've returned home to haunt the recipients.  Nettie and Rob now HAVE to return next year in time to give them away again. It's kinda like insurance to keep them close to home.
The Christmas party was another rousing success as Loraine and Jim opened their home to us.  The dining room table threatened to collapse under the weight of the food and I'm not the only one who lost dental work from laughing so hard during the Yankee auction.
We had some guests this year in the form of Brigitte Vautour and her fiance Denis who traveled from Rexton to present Curry with a pile of wood in the form of trophies for the Healey.
Gary gave a surprisingly long synopsis of the past year (our tenth) and we were all surprised by the number of runs we'd held. There was also some talk of a few special runs for next year including a visit to the Magdalen Islands.
Many folks commented that this was the best party yet(?!) which means that the bar has risen even higher.
The next meeting will be a movie night at Kelvin's place on the 21st (a Saturday) with Kelvin providing a Lancashire hotpot.  We'll be watching the original 'Italian Job'.

Official Report on the FABAC Christmas Party

Simply put this had to be one of our best Christmas parties we've had. Our hosts Jim and Lorraine opened up their home to us and provided us with a warm and festive welcome for our party .......and what a party it was!

The house and surroundings were decorated beautifully and provided a truly warm and festive environment. Jim and Lorraine were the ultimate hosts making everyone feel comfortable and welcome. Lorraine even entertained us while we ate with her wonderful musical abilities on the piano. Jim too ensured everyone had a dish of "Spotted Dick" to add to the festive time of year. This was the first time I experienced "Spotted Dick" which tasted far better then it's strange name imparts.

The pot luck dinner was delicious in every way with all the various foods and desserts. There was just too many delicious items to even focus on one. It was all delicious.

Looks like You had a great party!

Photo proof from Ellie here.

FABAC Christmas Party Remindeers

Update from David: DARN! I've been reading all the comments about what everyone is bringing for the potluck and now I am REALLY upset that I can't be there! Any chance for a "left-overs" party?!  ;-)

Just a reminder to mark next Saturday Dec 10 as the FABAC annual Christmas dinner at Jim and Lorraine Woodfords. As you know Jim and Lorraine have  hosted this event for us many times in the past and we know how much of a wonderful time we had. I expect this Christmas party to be one of the best. Here’s why.

In terms of the “fixings” Lorraine has been decorating for the last 2 weeks and we all know what a wonderful warm, welcoming and festive environment she creates for us. Jim too has also been using his creative skills to come up with some interesting festive events that I’m sure will arose interest and entertainment for those attending……  once we see what he has in store. One of the things I’m allowed to share with everyone is that he has ordered a case of “Spotted Dick” for everyone to experience! Now don’t be worried this is not “one of those personal communicable diseases” that we read about but rather a very traditional English seasonal dessert that I understand is very popular in Britain at this time of year. You’ve really got to admire the Brits for their titling and Jim for his festive sense of giving.

Another  very important and exciting event will be some major presentations. One of the primary organizers from the Rexton British car show will be making special presentations to our group. These are the awards that our club members and the club itself won at this summer's Rexton car show. Can you imagine they are coming here, to our Christmas party, to make these presentations. How amazing is that!  This speaks to the dedication that these folks have in making their car show, a New Brunswick British car show, one to be part of, to be proud of and one not to miss.

We will also be having the annual “Yankee Swap” event with a $10.00 limit per present. This will be voluntary participation activity. Find a gift that is humorous, interesting or wonderful in some way. Wrap it with no name, bring it and participate in one of the events that always guarantees to entertain, excite and bring  laughter. It’s always been one of the many highlights at our Christmas gatherings. Dianne Earl who always brings a special presence to the event has once again agreed to host it for us.

This is a BYOB, pot luck event so please bring your contribution.

The fun starts at 5pm. Jim and Lorraine live at 159 Mactaquac Heights. (Turn right off the Mactaquac Dam if coming from Fredericton, and take the first left as you go up the hill.)

Oh yes, our hosts have requested we let them know how many will be attending .Please email the site or me directly to confirm your attendance as well as what you will be bringing in terms of your pot luck contribution.

Looking forward to seeing you all there,

  Gary

Email from Rob H

Here is a link to Holden Vintage and Classic, no need to store your LBC all winter when you can purchase a set of these snow chains for your car and be driving all year around, or Bob Earl could probably make you a set from material purchased from Home Hardware for a fraction off the cost, hope all our club members have a great Christmas and find a set of snow chains in their stocking.

Way off topic: HDTV

I have some fundamental beliefs. One is that one should not have to pay for TV that is filled with commercials. Therefore, I have never had cable nor have I subscribed to any other form of TV content. I do however spend a lot of time playing with antennae and learning all I can about TV transmission. Since the changeover to digital, I have been fascinated with the incredibly high quality of over the air TV. It might interest you that most TV content providers compress most of their signals so they can give you LOTS of channels. In doing so, you lose definition—receiving with an antenna you get the full broadcast signal and truly high definition. When PBS first started broadcasting HDTV from Mars Hill a few years ago, I started experimenting. I spent a bit of money on gear, but I was able to get full screen beautiful high definition digital. Now, I am able to get High Definition digital CBC, CTV, Global, WAGM (and two sub-channels) and PBS (with two sub channels) with the antennae on my roof. Yes, no monthly payment. You may want more, but I don't. :-)
To make life easier when changing around antennae, rather than climb onto the roof—not a good idea for 69 year old men—I have rigged up my TV tower on a swivel so that I can lower it to work on it at ground level. If you are interested in seeing it in action, go to:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKJF_IoQf0U
So, with a modern TV and this:
I can get this, which is a photo of my screen:

Automobile Registration Reminders by Mail Reinstated

Stephen passed this along:

FREDERICTON (CNB) – The provincial government has reinstated the mail-out of motor vehicle registration renewal notices in New Brunswick.
Public Safety Minister and Solicitor General Robert Trevors made the announcement today in the legislative assembly.
"The provincial government has made a commitment to reinstate the mail-out of motor vehicle registration renewal notices, and I am proud to announce that we are fulfilling that promise," said Trevors.
Starting in December, motor vehicle owners with registrations expiring in January 2012 will receive notification through the mail.
"We recognize that there is a cost to providing this service, but we have heard from New Brunswickers loudly and clearly that it is a worthwhile expense to them," said Trevors.
The e-mail reminder option created in 2010 will continue for the motorists who have requested it. Improvements are expected by 2014-15 to enable the provincial government to offer motorists the option of choosing an e-mail reminder only.

Jag on the move

An email from Robbie:
Hi David, The Jag was moved to its new storage today. My son's friend at work is going to keep it in his garage for us until we can ship it up to Alberta. Will keep in touch with the club, we certainly enjoyed all the fellowship we received from all the members. Nettie is planning to make it to the Woodfords Christmas party. Bob and Dianne are going to bring her to the party.

Report on The Run to Christmas in The Village - Bob E.

What will probably be our smallest run took place under unusually warm skies today. Three cars wandered along the river to Gagetown for the Christmas in the village event.  While no LBCs were in attendance, we all had our sun roofs open.  It was a relaxing day as we took in a few shops and sampled local Christmas treats.  An impromptu lunch was proposed (mostly due the rumblings in someone's stomach) and we stepped into a restaurant and almost stepped on the toes of Karen and Ralph Holyoke who were seated close to the door. We brought each other up to date on the latest happenings in the respective cities before ordering lunch.
The weather had a lot to do with the enjoyment of the day and if you missed it...too bad!  Bllllppp!! (wet raspberry)

A Run to Christmas in the Village

The annual Christmas in the Village but-our-LBCs-are-stored-but-we're-gonna-go-anyway run is scheduled for this Saturday (the 26th of November).  I suggest that YOU folks meet at the Ramada Inn parking lot for a noon departure headed south.  Take the Burton Bridge to the south side (head into Burton) and we'll meet you folks as you come off the bridge.  This will get us into Gagetown before 1:00-ish leaving a couple hours to visit the decorated homes, do some shopping or browsing and possibly get together for a late lunch or early supper somewhere.  We can play it by ear (like we do everything) and decide on eating plans once we get there.
- Bob E.

Market meet-up

The Earls met Jim W, Steve W, and Jim Mc at the market on Saturday and had a nice chat.
(When Bob first sent this photo to the me, there was no caption with it, so I was planning to post it with some sort of explanation that Bob had bought a REAL car for Dianne, or something like that. But, I guess that was just a fig-newton of my imagination. - David)

Do you have some space?

Joe H tells me that Rob and Nettie have sold their house and have to be out by the end of the month. Rob needs somewhere to store his E-type until the spring. Any suggestions or offers?
UPDATE: Robbie found a place for his car.

Report on November FABAC Meeting

I know it's been said before but it bears repeating...we gotta get bigger meeting/dining rooms when we go out for our monthly get togethers.  Space was reserved for 24 but almost 30 showed up and wedged into the alcove at Dimitri's Greek restaurant off the Tannery.
Several folks started whining about not being able to drive their LBCs in the unusually fine fall weather due to the expiration of their seasonal licenses but were quickly interrupted (thankfully) by Gary.  He mentioned the passing of club member John Edwards whom some of us remember from years past.  We send out thoughts and condolences to his family.
The only big item to discuss was the upcoming Christmas party at Jim and Lorraine Woodford's on the 10th of December.  This will be a pot luck (of course) and all are requested to call Lorraine and let her know what you'll be bringing.  There will also be the traditional Yankee swap, and more than one member lamented last years no-show of the MGB mud flaps.  Hopefully they will resurface this year.
A short non-LBC run will attend the Gagetown Christmas in the village next weekend (26-27th Nov).  I know that only a few are interested in attending so I suggest that you post your preference here for either Saturday or Sunday.  I plan on an early afternoon run with a couple of hours for shopping/sightseeing followed by a light dinner at one of the local restaurants.
The big hit of the evening was the sight of Sandra and Larry modeling their new T-shirts.  The matching shirts sported pictures of them in their Triumph. A photo is attached.

FABAC Meeting Wednesday November 16

Hello, All.
I have reserved for 24 people at Dimitri's Restaurant on King Street.  Reservation is for 5:30 PM, Nov. 16th.  The reservation is in the Fredericton British Car Club's name.  They also have the name Dunphy and our phone number.  I told them I would let them know the numbers before we all arrive!!!   Unfortunately Vic and I cannot attend, as we have a friend coming out to celebrate her birthday that night.

MGB at Speed - submitted by Phil O.

For those who want to experience an MGB at its limit, here’s a video of a race prepped MGB 4 cylinder doing some practice laps at Carolina Motorsports Park in South Carolina.  The car is owned, driven and set up Hap Waltrop from Greenville, SC who runs Acme Speed Shop in Greenville. He specializes in MG and Triumph related parts, particularly engines and carb work, including bench rebuilds. I’ve seen some of his work in North Carolina and know folks who really have high praise for his shop.

The photo is one of Hap’s car.

Hi David
Good video of the new McLaren at the Nurburgring....a modern Brit car that I would like........I'd get the orange as well.  Bruce McLaren's colours on his race cars.
Joe
(This is the first car I have seen that truly looks like it has been shot out of a cannon! Incredibly quick! I would take the orange as well, or the black one, or the red one, or—you get my point. BTW, Horst certainly knows how to get the best out a car! - David)

Elle Va!

Here is a movie of our first view of Kelvin and his Westfield in motion:

It was presumptuous of us to assume that last weekend's run was the last of the season, as ten cars showed up at Kelvin's place Sunday afternoon under reasonably warm and sunny skies to escort his Westfield on its maiden voyage.  With the low white skateboard in the lead, we wandered up north along the 102 and stopped for a bit at the (closed for the season) Moonlight Restaurant to call Alex and Lise and warn them of our imminent arrival in Nackawic.  Once at the home of the world's largest axe, we stopped for tee & pee and chatted.  We may have made some new members as we talked for some time to a gent who has a Mini and is in the process of restoring a Karmann Ghia ("Wow, great car!").   We finally loaded up in the midst of numerous locals who showed considerable interest in our group and headed back to Freddy on the 105.  The trip was not without incident when John Bowles ran out of gas.  He'd mentioned that his gauge was not working and had a spare gas can with him so the stoppage was (thankfully) brief.  Although the skies had clouded over and the temperature was dropping, I found the trip home much more enjoyable than the trip up as the 105 is a gorgeous piece of road.

Here are photos of our autumn run from Stephen W.
AND photos on the move from Ellie here.
AND HERE is a better movie of Kelvin starting his Westfield. Vic's first shot at uploading to YouTube—very successfully.

FATCAPK ?!

During some drunken exchange in a hotel room in New Hampshire somewhere, a group of us threatened to go to Kelvins and put the engine in his Westfield whether he wanted us to or not.  Little did we realize that this was the birth of the FABAC Traveling Circus & Pit Krew, or FATCAPK for short.  We showed up at his home, ate the pizza, drank the beer, spread his tools all over his garage, paid homage to the race car and somehow managed to wedge an eighty pound engine into a sixty pound car.  He has since reported that it started and ran fine.  With its knuckles bloodied, FATCAPK is  battle-tested and hungry for more.  Got an interesting project?  Post your cry for help here.

Bob E's Report on October Meeting

Thirty two (or more depending on who did the counting) folks took over the Diamond House Chinese restaurant in Oromocto on Wednesday evening.  We may have to stick to larger places in the future as we barely fit.  It was a noisy bunch who all but shouted Jim down when he tried to take the floor and he had to wait until food orders had been taken.  As the driving season is on its last legs there wasn't much to report.  The run on Sunday was a huge success but then everybody already knew that.  Jim relayed news on the Christmas party.  It will be on the 10th of December at the Woodford's.  That's the TENTH. Chisel it into your kitchen cupboards now so that you'll be reminded every time you reach for a glass.
Gary introduced new members Rhonda Thomas and Danny Copp with their Miata.  They have threatened to get their '72 Mini on the road and were offered the services of FATCAPK (FABAC Traveling Circus & Pit Crew).   They've already attended a few gatherings and aren't really all that new but it was a chance to formally recognize them.
Kelvin dropped by long enough to report that the first outing of FATCAPK was a success.  The  Westfield started first turn of the key with perfect oil pressure and no leaks.  This means we've been anointed and are now a serious threat.
The next meeting will be held at Dimitri's Greek restaurant in the Tannery.

Convoy to Oromocto

For those who want to travel to the Diamond House restaurant in Oromocto as a group, we'll be departing Tim Hortons on the Hanwell Rd promptly at 5:15 PM.

BTW : The menu is posted on page 224 in the Yellow Pages.

FABAC Meeting this Wednesday

These things roll around pretty quickly I find. It seems we just ate! ;-)
We shall congregate on October 19th in Oromocto at the Diamond House restaurant (261 Restigouche Road). Eating at 6:00PM. Often people gather to chat from 5:30 onward.
See you there!

Report by Bob E on the OktoberFest Run

Despite darkening skies and imminent rain a full 20 cars responded to what is likely our last run of the season.  Jim B led us all over the back hills around Sussex and Norton where we enjoyed the fall colours.  A few folks departed before Sussex due to prior commitments and a group from St Johns joined us for a bit on our way to the restaurant.  We where also delighted to have the Sweets (now of PEI) join us for supper.
A rousing crowd took over the parking lot, then the restaurant and wolfed down lots of German fare.  Alex and Lise dressed for the occasion in lederhosen and a dirndl.  More than one of us confirmed Alex's opinion that his wife was indeed 'hot'.
The return trip was not without a bit of rain which the 'Jims' took as a challenge and kept their tops own.  Snug (and smug) with our tops comfortably in place through the rain squalls I'm sure I'm not the only one who later regretted it as the sky cleared and a lovely fall twilight ensued.
A thanks to everyone who showed up to send off the summer weather and a special thanks to Jim B for putting the run together.

Photos by Bob E are here.
Photos by Ellie are here.

As the weather grows cooler...

...I dress warmer. I almost wore this for the OktoberFest Run, but decided to wait until it snowed.  ;-)
(Click on the photo for better detail.)

I'm really looking forward to our Oktober-Fest run

I hope lots of people are going to take in this run. Beautiful trees these days and a pretty fine day predicted. I went to Saint John in the Morgan (top down) yesterday (Tuesday) morning. The temperature was 4ºC when I left. It was a bit chilly but if one dresses for it, how good it feels to be on the open road these final days for that opportunity. Ahhhh, the Morgan sounded so good! Can't wait until Sunday! See you then!

Well, that went well!

The Lucas starter on Carolyn's TR6 recently was presenting problems—like not starting the car. After taking it to the local rebuilder shop and wondering just how long it would take to gather the parts and do the repair, I decided to take Terry J's advice and try one of the gear-reduction starters that are available. Those of you who have removed a starter from a TR6 might will remember the frustration of working in a very limited space. I anticipated having to take the car apart, but found that once the two nuts and bolts had been removed and the electrics disconnected, the starter came up the top way with only the air cleaners needing to be removed. It is heavy. The new one, significantly lighter and smaller, went in without a hitch. My long musician fingers were just right for the task. Of course the most pleasant part was turning the key. Instant success! (I found the starter at Classicgarage.com for $179.96US. Installation cost $0.00)

Bob and Johanna on the McAdam train ride

The day was a lot of fun! Train got up to a top speed of 15 miles/hour, so no chance of whiplash, even when making goofy poses like above.
We even got robbed by a bunch of cowboys, complete with toy guns.
We met a lot of very pleasant train affectionatas. Even lost Bruce at one point, and for the rest of the trip people were coming up to me asking me if I had found my husband...
All in all, it was a great day.

Winter storage?

Hi David:
I am looking for a safe and dry place to store my MGB this winter starting in November.  Could you post this on your Blog site to see if any members have information on storage areas for cars?
Thanks.

Nice to hear from the Sweets

Hi David
Hope all is well with you.  Pat and I are doing well here on the Island.  We do miss the club however and check out your fine web work on a regular basis.  It appears that you have had a great summer of tours and activities.  Lots of great write-ups and photos.

I was just checking out the online version of the Globe and Mail and came across an article on LBCs and thought I would point it out in case you hadn’t already seen it.  The link to the page is http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-drive/car-life/classic-cars/a-starters-guide-to-little-british-cars/article2185489/

Hope to see you all at the Octoberfest run to the Gasthof later this month.

Morgans in Italy

David:
We were walking through the small town of Baveno in northern Italy when what should appear but a thundering herd of Morgans.  The things are everywhere - there is no escaping them.  You and Woodford would look good in those leather helmets.

Breakfast at Frank's Finer Diner

Come on guys!!! This was just a breakfast!!! However, hundreds of FABACians turned up on the summer-like day to enjoy, yet again, feast and fellowship.
Here are photos by Stephen.

Report on September's FABAC Meeting by Bob E.

Thirty three FABACians crammed into the back room of the Lougheed Pub in Harvey on Wednesday evening.  Highlights from the meeting (aside from the food) are as follows:
  • Jim B mentioned the tentative date of Oct 16th for a return to the German restaurant we visited last year.
  • There will be a breakfast run this Sunday (25th) on the north side at Frank's Finer Diner around 10:30 AM.  This will be followed by a visit to Joe H's to see his car.  I expect he'd like some help sanding the paint job.
  • There were a LOT of tales from the British Invasion in Stowe.  We all again thanked Currie and Kelvin for their jobs well performed during the weekend.
  • The MacNallys volunteered to host an event/meeting in the spring.
  • Henning Theorin presented his new/old TR4 which has recently become drivable after a l-o-n-g vacation.
  • The next meeting will be in Oromocto at the Diamond House restaurant.

Safety on the road

I was more than impressed with Kelvin on our trip to Stowe, who had offered his services as our rear-gunner for our convoy of nine Little British Cars. At one point in the rain when one of our cars faltered and had to pull off to the side of the road, Kelvin donned his safety vest and then went about offering his assistance. This was more than I had expected from his role but indicates his level of professionalism when it comes to safety.
Over the early years at FABAC meetings, from time to time we discussed guidelines for our tours and traveling together for safety and to help make them pleasurable for all involved. Here are some that I remember and I encourage you to make suggestions for changes or additions.
  • It is the responsibility of the lead car or organizer of the tour to explain the route before departing.
  • The lead car should observe speed limits, or agreed upon limits if slower vehicles are involved.
  • The lead car should signal and pull off on a safe shoulder after each turn where there is the possibility of someone not making the turn because they got left behind at a red light or traffic. Do not pass the lead car.
  • There should always be a 'rear guard', usually some 'dependable' make, with a cell phone or walkie-talkie, who can make sure that no one has problems without someone to help them.  Remember, that it is illegal for the driver to operate one, so make sure your passenger is the operator. Walkie-talkies are useful for all participants in a convoy, so consider picking one up for yourself.
  • Cell phone numbers are shared. (This doesn't always help as some of us can't hear or feel a cell phone ringing in our cars, and, in New Brunswick, there is not always adequate reception.)
  • If anyone is planning to leave the group, that should be made known to the leader before departing so that the lead and following cars will know.
  • Take every opportunity to have a full tank and an empty bladder. ;-)
  • We need to make every effort to avoid being a nuisance to other drivers not involved with our group, who wish to pass and move on. Communications between the lead and tail cars should lead to a safe spot to pull over when cars start 'piling up' behind us.
  • Avoid tailgating.
  • Addendum from Terry (Excellent): Everyone should remember to make sure they can see the member behind them in their mirror. If one does not see their follower for more than a few kms they should slow up to allow the car to catch up.

Contacts at Stowe

I received this email from Terry:

Sunday evening the question was posed to each of us, what was the hi-light of the show for you?
Gary said for him, by far, it was the contacts he made so can you please put the attached on the site for all to help explain the type of contacts he was referencing?

Thanks,
Terry

Here is a letter that Terry received from a contact at Stowe:

Terry,
It was nice chatting with you on the field at Stowe Sunday morning.  My family is all over me now to get to work on our TR3 (TS183xxL)!  So I have started some planning to do just that.  In the meantime, I said that I would send you a picture of our car when it was in its youth.  The race picture was taken at Limerock Park in CT, during the 1969 race season.  The second picture is when the car was displayed at a car show held at the coliseum in Hartford CT in 1970.  As mentioned, this car was bought new in 1957 by 2 Pratt & Whitney engineers for weekend racing and the car was never driven on public roads.  They sold the car in 1968 to a local gentleman who continued to campaign the car for a few more years, then it went into storage until we bought it in 1989.  I guess it is about time to get to work on her.

I hope your trip back was without incident.  I certainly admire your car club for gathering together a large group and putting a thousand miles on the cars.

All the best,
Chris Wilson

Lots of great photos coming in.

How about sending me yours?

British Invasion Stowe 2011 - A Report from Gary

Morgan Three-Wheelers setting up in early morning mist
Terry and Karen over a hill
What a spectacular event the British Invasion 2011 in Stowe was. There was just so many attractions and thrills it would be hard to describe them in the detail that would do the event true justice. If I had to use a phrase that would capture my sentiment, it would be this event would be the one that I would measure all the others against! That's how good it was.

So here are but a few of the details but before I go there I'd personally like to thank Curry, John and Kelvin for making all the arrangements for getting us there, for organizing us while we were there and then getting us back! No small accomplishment when you realize it was a 1000 mile return journey and we had a spectacular time while there!

While the weather was not the greatest for the day and a half travel there, it certainly made up for it on the Saturday and Sunday show days as well as our return trip. The good news too is that we left we 9 British show cars and returned home with the same number and no real issues to speak of.

September 21 FABAC meeting (RSVP)

Good afternoon, FABACians and guests;

Now that everyone is back, we can plan for the Wednesday, September 21 meeting at The Lougheed in Harvey Station. I suggest we leave Tim Horton's at Hanwell and Bishop Drive at 5:10, to be in Harvey for close to 6:00 PM.

The folks from the restaurant understand our desire to drive in the daylight, if possible, so have proposed that we pre-order from the following entrees. Our willingness to do so would be rewarded with the entree and dessert (pies and cheesecake) coming in at $9.95!!

You can place your order as a comment to the blog or by e-mailing Dennis/Brenda at dbwilliams@rogers.com .

This will be one of the last chances to enjoy our cars this year, so let's have a great turnout.

Thanks.
Dennis.

All of the following would include one of our homemade desserts- a great selection of pies and cheesecake-for$9.95
  • Philly Steak- thinly sliced roast beef with mushrooms, onions and green peppers covered in mozzarella cheese On a toasted bun and served with fries or salad
  •  Chicken Stirfry- chunks of chicken breast with fresh veggies served on basmati rice and our secret sauce
  •  Quesadilla-chunks of chicken with onions, green peppers, tomatoes, mozzarella and cheddar grilled between 2 tortilla wraps
  •  2 pieces of haddock with fries
  •  Chicken Caesar Salad Wrap,
Looking forward to hearing from you

Saint John Run 9/11/11

A magnificent day. Ellie captured a few moments of it here.

LBCs — Why do we love them?

Well, folks, I have figured it out. We love our little British cars because there is nothing that matches the joy experienced when you finally get the damned thing working the way it should!

Sunday Tour September 11th

Club tour to Saint John and visit with our United Empire Loyalist FABACIAN cousins.
  • Gather at Costco parking lot next to Wayne Squibb Blvd. on Sunday PM.
  • Leave at 1:00 PM via route 101 to Welsford and a rest stop at the Irving service station.
  • Next Route 7 and 100 to Manawagonish Road into the city, cross old Reversing Falls bridge and take the first left onto Fallsview Ave. to Jet Boat and Zip line Park.
  • We will rendezvous with our Saint John members in parking lot and plan our next move.

Preliminary details for Travellers to Stowe

It is time to start thinking about our Stowe trip and coordination with regards to registration and lodging have or should be completed by now for those that are making the journey (although it is never too late for others to join in on the fun). As in the past, we will complete the drive in a day and a half, taking pity on our older cars and classic bodies and make an over night stop in Gorham, NH. This is a good distance to travel in a day and makes the completion of our trip to Stowe easy the next day arriving around 12:30 pm or so. For those of us traveling together I would like to meet at our home for an 8:00 am departure on Thursday 15th.

Catharine wins Mountain Bike World Championships!

Catharine has done it! Today she won the World Championships. I think that is pretty awesome, and that was before I realized she is the first Canadian to win an Olympic discipline mountain bike world title since 2002. Now if I can only get the press to recognize that she is a native NB'er rather than a Kamloops'ier!

(A nice article here.)

A great offer for FABACians heading to Stowe

It does not look as if I am going to have the car ready for Stowe so have a lift arranged with Gary. However a friend suggested that if I was still prepared to drive down then why don't I take my Nissan Sentra down as a support vehicle. I could carry a full tool kit, with some spares such as electrical repair kit, wire, hoses, spare gas and water, trolley jack and any other spares that members would like to take down but can't fit in their own cars.  I could also take down any excess luggage that members have so that they don't have to squash every thing in their brit car or overload it.
A couple of members have already expressed an interest, and I could run as "tail end Charlie" with radio contact to the lead car.
I am quite happy to drive down and carry spares / luggage for people, it may add a little security for such a long journey.
Perhaps those going down would like post a reply as to whether they think it a good idea.

An update on the topic of train rides To/From McAdam

I have just heard from the folks involved with the McAdam to St. Stephen return train trip. It will be held on Sept. 30, 2011. The cost will be $50.00,  plus $20.00 for the Roast Beef Dinner in the formal dining room. Anyone interested should call Bill Young at 466-4557.

I have not heard anything about plans for a Harvey to McAdam train trip.

Additional Comments from Gary on The Rexton Show

I just wanted to add a few additional comments to this past weekends BCDNB event. While I was there for only the Saturday it was evident that this show and it's organization were exceptional. The organizers obviously put a huge amount of effort into this event in an attempt to make it a success and to have it grow.

In many ways it was a great success. They have a perfect venue located on the grounds of the Bonar Law Commons, a beautiful historic site located on the Richibucto River. On the day of the car show there was live entertainment from a wonderful local band who really knew how to liven up the venue. There was also a food venue serving hamburgers/hotdogs, an enclosed but well situated beer venue located very close to the river and to our cars, several other covered seating/picnic areas, a well informed interpretive center for the Bonar Law Commons as well as a number of restored historic buildings in situe and finally organizers who cared and interacted with the participants ensuring everyone was being looked after. It does not get much better then this, adding of course the weather was beautiful as well.....almost too much so and thus the reason the beer venue seen so much activity!

In addition to this wonderful venue and superlative organization we also as a club did extremely well in the awards arena! John B's already pointed out in his report the details of the awards including FABAC winning the award for the Club with most participants. I am, as well as we should all be very proud of our overall participation in this event. After all it is a New Brunswick show and as such, it is a car event I feel we ought to be very supportive of. Unfortunately increased club participation was not the case overall case this year and in fact the participant numbers for this years event were down..... considerably. It's hard to believe with all the wonderful things going for it that the numbers would actually decrease.

I and others who participated in this years event feel strongly that we as a club have to further demonstrate our support for this event. Otherwise I'd be concerned it could suffer as a result of future ongoing low participation levels. If anyone has any ideas/suggestions as to how we as a club can help support this great event then let's hear about it. I intend to make this an agenda item for future discussions so please forward any idea to me or to the group as a whole.

One of the other positive aspects of this event was the wonderful  friendliness amongst the participants. While the overall numbers were down, the friendliness factor in my estimation was  a high. Everyone seemed to be interacting with one another and not just sitting around acting as guard posts for their cars. It was nice to meet old friends and make new acquaintances. In addition John B asked me to mention that some of the participants upon hearing of Sherry A's birthday helped her celebrate it on Sunday. What a great thing to do and further evidence that this is a great group of people to be associated and to have fun with!

Also, we had some of our Saint John contingent participate as well with the Warrens and Greens participating with their great looking LBCs. Ralph Holyoke and Dave Farrah from Saint John also showed up in Ralph's Audi Quattro. It was great seeing them all again.

All in all this was good time and a great event that can only improve with your participation.

 Thanks,
  Gary A

FABAC WINS BIG AT REXTON SHOW

Under sunny skies, the fourth annual “British Car Days Of New Brunswick” classic car show was last weekend held on Bonar Law Common in Rexton where 26 cars of all types and conditions were displayed. Entries included a Land Rover, a rare Jaguar XK150 coupe and an even rarer 1927 Vauxhall roadster.

(Rexton is the birthplace of Andrew Bonar Law, the only Prime Minister of Great Britain to have been born outside the British Isles.)

The event included an optional  two-part tour of the Rexton area on the Friday. It was both informative and different as it included mistakes in the route map, a visit to an elk farm and a meeting with the “Pumpkin Lady”, a unique Jardineville market gardener! An evening reception for entrants was held in the Bonar Law Museum building and hosted by the Village of Rexton and Mayor David Hanson.

Throughout the Saturday show day, a six-piece band played, hamburgers and hotdogs consumed and much classic car information exchanged between the visiting general public and the car owners. Highlight of the event, at least for FABAC members was the evening awards banquet where FABAC stole the show. First place for the Mayor’s Choice, People’s Choice and Participant’s Choice awards went to Curry A with his 1966 Austin-Healey Mk3 BJ8. Runner-up in the People’s Choice Award went to Karen (and Terry) J. with her 1960 Triumph TR3A. And to top it off, FABAC won the award for having the largest number of club entries (eight) beating the BATANS club most of whose members had chosen not to attend. (Their tour to PEI the following weekend conflicted apparently) John B. accepted the award on behalf of FABAC.

FABAC members Gary A and Karen/Terry J. attended the event just for the Saturday (Rexton is only a two and a half hour drive on good roads from Fredericton.) and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Members that missed the event missed an excellent one, very well organized, and in a gorgeous riverside setting. The event organizers are planning an even better one for next year, one not to be missed.

John B.

This HOT tip from Tim R.

I was cruising the internet and there is a red 1979 MGB for sale at Jardine Auctioneers, Hanwell Road, Tuesday August 23rd.

This email from Trish of the Ottawa MG Club

Hello, Brit Car fans in Fredericton,
Don't know if you recall a couple of years ago some of your members meeting Roy Locock who was driving around the world in his MG Midget named Bridget - well I just found out that he DID write a book based on his diary of the event.  It's recently published and called "Not in That Car" and I thought some of your members might be interested in reading it - I can only find the e-reader edition, and I'm told it does work on other types of reader besides the Kindle.  It looks like the hard copy is out of print already, but hopefully if there is sufficient demand they will do a reprint.

Report on the August FABAC Meeting

The August monthly meeting was held in Dianne Earl's (my wife) garden with a supper of seafood chowder, burgers, and brauts.  Lots of salads and deserts were brought along offering a fine feast in the traditional FABAC style.
  • The business items where somewhat short this month.  We thanked the Bowles for last weekend's run to Tony Rickett's place and discussed upcoming events.
  • It looks like Rexton won't be heavily attended by the club this year. John Bowles will be heading up early to attend the rally.  It does however, look like we'll have over a dozen cars going to Stowe Vermont this fall in September.  If anyone is on the fence and might want to attend you should send your application in soon as they have a September 5th cutoff and the registration must be MAILED in. There are still hotels available in the area.
  • We had a brief discussion about whether we should acknowledge the passing off members relatives on the website.  There seems to be some strong feelings on this and I'd suggest we discuss this on the club's forum.  The forum is little used and would make the perfect place to air opinions.
  • It gave me great pleasure to present Joe Hines with a tacky Jaguar phone.  I didn't want to be the only one who proudly displays a tasteless item in his home. There are now three of them in the club and yes, I keep watching for them to come up on eBay.
  • Our next meeting in September will be at the pub in Harvey.
  • Dianne and I thank everyone who enjoyed our hospitality and hope you had a good time.  We were delighted to have the club and now that most folks know where we live we hope you take the time to drop in.  There is always beer in the brewery and the teapot is usually hot.

FABAC draws blood! (Hey, this goes along with "Seeing red" posted earlier)

Despite predictions of pounding rain, Sunday the 14th was almost too gorgeous.  It hovered at just being a little too hot and sunny....a perfect excuse to don wide brimmed hats, slather on the sun screen and go for a drive with the top down in a car with character!
We met a dozen cars as they passed us by the Burton Bridge headed south and joined in.  The drive, led by the lovely and talented John Bowles, meandered down the Kingston peninsula through Norton and other quaint towns.  We only got a little lost on two occasions and a small group in the rear decided to play the "Lets-stop-at-some-random-spot-for-no-apparent-reason-and-see-if-anyone-notices" game. The game quickly became boring and was swapped for that other popular pastime "I'd-take-the-the-lead-but-I-have-no-idea-where-we-are-or-where-we're-going". Thankfully Gary-n-Barb showed up to lead us out of our dilemma. (Note to self: in the future, bring my own map and mark out the route ahead of time.)
The first scheduled stop at a museum in Kingston turned out to be closed (maybe they heard we were coming?) leaving us no choice but to continue on to the home of Tony Rickett.
Once at Tony's place, we parked by the river next to a copse of trees to enjoy the shade, eat our picnic lunches, and bask in the cool breeze coming off the river.  Our host was introduced by John who also presented Tony with a mounted historical article from an old newspaper detailing the restoration of one of his Triumphs.  Tony gave us a brief introduction to the winery and invited us to spend the afternoon strolling around.  He had a Jaguar E-Type and a Healey 100-4 parked in the middle of the grape fields and two very nice Triumphs down by the water.
The gang ate and whiled away the early afternoon.  A rousing game of horse shoes was played and as the time to leave approached, John introduced us to several new games to which prizes of wine were offered.  The first involved a short footrace together with stabbing at random switches in one's own car.  The action was heated with several competitors going down on the slippery grass.  Larry H. left some skin on the passenger side mirror of his new Triumph (note to self: carry a REAL first aid kit from now on.) and ruined his pants in the doing.  The second contest saw us driving over some of John's tools blindfolded.  Thankfully there were no sharp items in the small collection and no one drove into the river.
With the contests over, we headed back towards Evandale and (of course) got lost twice.  The two ferry rides were short, pleasant, and a bit of a break from driving.  At the Evandale Inn we settled in for a dinner that I, for one, didn't need.
After dinner, we drifted into the parking lot and headed home in small groups.  It was now into early evening and noticeably cooler heading up the 102 towards Freddy.  The day had been terrific despite the heat and getting a bit lost on occassion only added to the merriment.   Thanks to the Bowles for planning and implementing this fine outing for the second year and thanks to Tony Rickett for allowing us to drip oil on his lawn.
Hopefully Larry will heal from his injuries quickly and scrub the unsightly hair and skin from the mirror.  I was disappointed that the passengers didn't have to partake in the games and am planning revenge for next year.

Driving the Dream - An Update

Hi Dave:
Hope you folks had a great tour and picnic today.  We’ve been very busy with company and new house construction so haven’t been keeping up with what’s going on. Hope to perhaps make a day trip to Rexton next weekend.

Here’s the link to the Driving the Dream blog. They’re presently in Myrtle Beach and just reached the 8000-mile mark from their start in Vancouver.  Steve Kaufman has been in touch and will give me a couple of days notice before arriving in NB if a few FABACians would like to meet up with them.

Information for next Wednesday's August meeting at the Earl's house

That's 9 Hemlock Dr. in Burton. Take the 102 past the Burton bridge and head towards Gagetown. Turn right onto Cameron just after the (soon to close) Burton School and follow it for a K or so turning left onto Hemlock. We're the second house on the right.  Dinner will be at the normal hour of 6(ish) but we don't mind if you arrive early.
The main course of burgers and sea food chowder will be provided. Anyone wishing to bring desserts or side dishes should call (357-1183) or email (bentbobb@gmail.com)
The herb garden is growing like a thing possessed and anyone needing herbs is welcome to bring a bag.  Folks are welcome to sample anything ripe while strolling the gardens, but know what you're picking as
crops are not necessarily planted in any order. I'm sure the club would get a kick out of watching you wolf down a hot tamale that you mistook for a tomatillo.
Our yard is guaranteed barefoot friendly.  Kick 'em off and enjoy the cool woods and lawn.
Our cats are only partially domesticated and make great sport of stealing food.  Watch the wiry gray tabby, she's sneaky.
Gardeners are welcome to shop from any potted plants found in the woods.  These are plants brought home over the years and placed in the woods for safekeeping.  They have long since been forgotten about and won't be missed.
     We have mosquitoes...bring bug juice.

Larry and Sandi's Triumph TR3A Pickup

(Click on any photo for a larger view)
Following Bob’s request, here is an account of our, fortunately, fairly uneventful trip home from Ipswich MA with our TR3A.  (We’re debating about whether to call it our new toy or our new baby.)  As an old Boy Scout I internalized the Scout motto “Be Prepared” in preparation for our trip.  Consequently I put together a tool kit, trying to anticipate any problems that could occur that I actually might be able to fix.  I packed my tools in the tool box that I got when I had the first new car I ever bought, a  1970 VW  van.  Back then, I always carried with me the book “How to Keep Your VW alive:  A Step by Step Manual for the Complete Idiot”, which was fitting for me with my limited mechanical prowess.   For this trip I had a TR3 service manual.  I also packed the Craftsman open end wrenches and ratchet and socket set that I bought when I was 16 when I purchased my first car, a 1957 Morris Minor.  Just for nostalgia, I threw in a tool which came with the tool kit in my father’s TR2, a  ”combination tool (screwdriver, tommy bar and nave plate remover)”.  Not sure what a nave plate remover is.  I also packed other assorted tools, WD40, wire, tubing, a fire extinguisher, etc. etc. (see photo).    For me, the mental preparation was way more challenging than gathering together a few tools.  The part of my brain responsible for anxiety tried to go into overdrive.  I worried about driving a car for over 400 miles that I had no experience with.  I worried about driving on the interstate, particularly merging with traffic using the rudimentary mirrors on the car.  I worried about being run over by a transport truck who would only feel a small bump and probably not even notice that I was squished.  I worried about the weather.  I had no end of worries.

Dates have been selected for next year's British Motoring Festival

Joe H. received this message from organizer Margaret Bond:

I am wondering if you might be able to let the Fredericton LBC club know our dates for next year’s BMF? I am not sure if you are connected with the Moncton group as well and if so- if you could pass along the dates to them too that would be much appreciated.

It will be held at Kings-Edgehill school once again and will be the weekend of July 20th, 21st and 22nd, 2012.

The committee is taking a break for the rest of the summer and will be getting together once again in early October. Keep your eyes on our website as we plan to update it a lot sooner this time with the planned events of the weekend.     www.britishmotoringfestival.com

Our photographer, Martin Wigginton, has put up all the pictures that he had taken at this year’s festival, and they can be seen in the gallery. There is a lovely panoramic photo there as well.

If anyone has any comments that they would like to pass along—positive or negative—please send them to either our email address mbond@ns.sympatico.ca  or send it to the ‘contact us’ place on our website. We will take these in to the committee when we next meet and try to work on the info. It can only help us get better.

Cape Breton boys are already booked in as well as some of the Halifax crowd! Don’t let the New Brunswick crowd fall behind!

TOUR REPORT FOR SUN. JULY 31ST

The New Brunswick Tourism and Transportation Departments deserve all the credit for a really  different tour last Sunday! Starting from Timmies in the Exhibition Grounds, seven cars took off along Hwy.101 to Tracey, Fredericton Junction and Blissville.

Tour participants were Dwight B. and cousin (MGB); Dennis and Brenda W. (Chrysler-Maserati); Robbie and Nettie H. (MGB); Herb and Helen W. (Mazda Miata); new members Bill and Rose W. (Jaguar XK8); Alex H (Triumph TR6) and John and Shirley Ann B. (MGB), the tour leaders.

Following the department’s map, the group turned off Hwy.101 onto Hwy. 785 enroute for Black’s Harbour and a lunch stop at Comeau’s Fish Restaurant. However, the further the group drove, the further the group got lost – driving down two dead end (fortunately) paved roads and eventually coming out at H’wy 101 in Hoyt! John B. put the error(s) down to the inaccurate tourism map and the absence of highway direction signs!

Then followed an extended tour to Black’s Harbour via Welsford and onto Hwy 1 past Musquash, Lepreau, and finally to the restaurant where a first class fish menu awaited the hungry group. Also waiting were Dennis and Brenda W. who had found the missing highway and proceeded to follow it independently.

After lunch, the group split up with the tour continuing to St. Andrews for FABACians in the Triumph, Miata and two MGBs. A stroll through the town and an ice cream preceded a return to Fredericton via Hwys 127 and 3.

All in all, a different tour in glorious sunshine which saw us out in our classic cars enjoying it—at least that is what everyone said!!

John B.

(Dwight's cousin Neil took a few photos and put a short driving video on YouTube for your pleasure.)

Anyone up for a 17,000 mile run?!!

Phil passed this info on about two Canadian couples who are doing this in their old MGs:

Dave:
I’ve been following these folks on their adventures and have made tentative arrangements to meet them when they get to NB in late August, early September.  Do you think FABAC might be interested in meeting up with them and showing them around or perhaps hosting them?

[Two members and their wives, of the Canadian Classic MG Club are planning a 17000 mile trip around the USA and Canada. We're starting from Vancouver, headed for MG2011 in Reno. South from there to San Diego area. Then along the Mexican border to San Padre Islands and the rest of the Gulf coast.Into Florida and Key West. Then back north to do the "Tail of the Dragon" in North Carolina's Smoky Mountains. Back out to the coast and north to St. John’s in Newfoundland. From there back west via Niagara Falls and down to Mt. Rushmore. After this we'll be heading home.
We are traveling in a 1966 MGB and a 1961 MGA. We would love to hear from MG folk anywhere along or near our route. You could tell us of your favorite places and MG roads in your areas.]

Here’s a link to their blog.  Quite an adventure!!
